OW-F secures Ålandsbanken “Baltic Sea Reward” funding
Christina and Kenneth Kumenius-Liljerot from Rantasalmi have developed a natural fermentation method that transforms biowaste into fertilizer and improves soil health—without producing any side waste. The innovation recently received a €50,000 grant from Ålandsbanken’s Baltic Sea Project.
Tested at Qvidja Gård with support from Saara Kankaanrinta and Ilkka Herlin, the method binds harmful nutrients, cleans the soil of pathogens, and restores oxygen-depleted areas. The process also drastically reduces carbon emissions compared to traditional composting.
Scientific research is ongoing in partnership with the Universities of Helsinki and Turku, and interest in the method is growing—especially in regions like Åland, where nutrient recycling and logistics are key challenges.
